CENTER POINT — Pinson Valley struggled to get momentum all night against Minor, but specifically it struggled to contain Gene Davis.
Davis hit 7-for-13 (54 percent) from the field, 9-of-10 (90 percent) from the foul line and grabbed eight rebounds, as he led the Tenacious Tigers to a 58-48 first-round win Tuesday in the Jefferson County Large Schools Boys Basketball Tournament at Center Point.
The Indians held a two-point lead at halftime, thanks to a buzzer-beater by Zach Jackson. But Davis took command in the third quarter with 12 points, compared to just six for the entire Pinson squad.
The Indians struggled mightily with shooting, hitting just 29 percent from the field, and committed 17 turnovers.
Donevan Waldrop led the Tribe with 17 points, and Jackson contributed 13. Derrick Jolly added 16 for Minor, going 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Pinson Valley will face Hueytown in a consolation-bracket game Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
