Weather: More storms. After fog burns off this morning, we will be partly cloudy with more storms forming this afternoon and tonight. They will continue through Wednesday morning. Highs will be in the lower 80s, with nighttime lows in the lower 60s. We’ll start to clear off and cool just a bit tomorrow afternoon.
Traffic: Nothing out of the ordinary on I-65 through the Corridor X construction today.
Indictment in Kimberly probe. The first charges have been handed down by a federal grand jury in the investigation into gambling and corruption in Morris. Robert Taylor, Jr. was indicted on conspiracy, bribery and illegal gambling charges last week, in indictments made public Monday. Taylor is charged with operating or providing machines for the AMVETS post and at least three other locations in the city, as well as bribing Mayor Craig Harris to ensure police protection. Harris, of course was secretly recording the bribes for the FBI. More indictments are expected in this probe soon.
Mr. Mayor, close this road! A group of residents of Phillips Drive in Gardendale have petitioned the city to close a portion of the road near its western entrance on Fieldstown Road, where a new Dollar General store is being built. Teresa Watson represented the group at Monday’s Gardendale City Council meeting, where she presented a petition asking the city to vacate a small potion just beyond the entrance to the store. Phillips Drive forms a loop with two entrances on Fieldstown Road; residents complain that construction vehicles have gone the long way around the narrow street to get out, increasing traffic and sometimes closing the road entirely.
Sports: Mortimer Jordan’s girls and Fultondale’s boys each finished ninth over the weekend at their respective AHSAA Track and Field State Championships. The Blue Devils, in Gulf Shores, were ninth in Class 5A largely behind the work of Amanda Dean, who won silver in the 300-meter hurdles and finished fifth in the 100-meter dash, sixth in the 200 plus the 100-meter hurdles. ArDarius Stewart won two silver medals and Deundrea Marshall one for the Wildcats in Selma. Stewart was second in the long jump and discus, while Marshall places second in the 300-meter hurdles. Both were finalists in the 100-meter dash, with Marshall fourth and Stewart fifth.
