If the Gardendale City Council was not aware of traffic and safety issues on Phillips Drive, they certainly are after their regular session Monday night.
Several residents of Phillips Drive were at the meeting to express their frustrations at the lack of action taken by city leaders to keep the commercial traffic off their narrow residential street.
Problems first began a few weeks ago when construction started on a new Dollar General store, located where the street intersects with Fieldstown Road.
Neighborhood representative Teresa Watson, who is an attorney, and several residents reported that dump trucks, concrete trucks and other construction traffic have already caused problems, including temporary closure of the road by construction crews.
Residents contended that if construction crews favor using the narrow road, then customers of the retail store will most likely follow the pattern. Phillips Drive is a loop with two entrances on Fieldstown Road: one at the east end by the new store, and another to the west.
Watson presented three petitions to council members, which she said follows Alabama municipal law as the first step toward the neighborhood residents' main goal, the closure of Phillips Drive at the end of the retail store's property line.
The two property owners whose land would be needed to create a dead end are Mark and Donna Cornelius, and James L. and Mary J. Stewart. The petition confirms in writing that the two property owners are willing to give up a portion of their land to the city to create a turnaround for vehicles.
The council took no action, but said they would study the petitions and consider the proposal to close the road.
