North Jefferson News
— Friday, and you’re ready for the weekend, right? (Why do we even ask?)…
Weather: Sunny today, scattered showers for the weekend. It should be a nice summer Friday with highs in the lower 90s and nighttime lows in the lower 70s. A chance of scattered showers returns Saturday and carries on into Sunday.
Preserving history. The city of Pinson is applying to designate two separate areas as federally-designated historic districts. A consultant updated the city council in Thursday night’s meeting on the application process, which first goes to the Alabama Historical Commission. Large parts of Pinson Main Street and also the Pinson Hills neighborhood would be designated as National Register Historic Districts. Another district application is in the works for the Palmerdale community.
Pinson men arrested for vehicle break-ins. Vestavia Hills Police had to chase their suspects for miles, but finally caught up with the pair in Tarrant. Jacob Rentfrow, 18, and Joseph Tinnin, 20, were caught after police were called to a robbery in progress near I-65 and Alford Avenue, and saw the suspects trying to get away. They are charged with three counts each of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle (UBEV) plus one count of receiving stolen property. A police spokesman says that they are checking to see if the two men might be implicated in numerous other UBEVs, including some in north Jefferson County.
Sports: Welcome to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia — unless you’re gay. Russian authorities say they will enforce a new law at the 2014 Winter Games that prohibits gay-rights activism, more specifically the advocacy of “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.” The law doesn’t specifically ban gay athletes, but keeps them from demonstrating in the streets in favor of homosexuality and gay rights, according to The New York Times and Fox News… Baseball: Atlanta ran its winning streak to seven games, thanks to an 11-2 thrashing of Colorado. Justin Upton hit two homers, and starting pitcher Julio Teheran struck out 11.
