Warrior council sets Merchants' Week event

WARRIOR — The Warrior City Council is hoping that spring fever can lure some customers to local businesses.

Mayor Johnny Ragland asked the council to approve a city-wide promotion to be called Merchants Week, in which businesses would be encouraged to have sidewalk or tent sales.

The event will be held Monday through Saturday, March 11-16. Ragland said that he hopes to have extra events, such as remote broadcasts from radio stations.

The council approved the purchase of advertising to promote the event during Monday’s regular session.

The council also agreed to send a letter to the Jefferson County Commission, asking that the county install guard rails along a section of Warrior-Kimberly Road just outside the city. That stretch of road, south of the Church Street bridge, was the site of a wreck that recently claimed the life of Mortimer Jordan High School student Josh Fredrick.

The request came from former council member Brad Fuller. The letter is a bit of a formality, as County Commissioner Joe Knight was present at the council meeting and talked with Fuller about the guard rail.

The council also addressed the issue of the city “buying back” vacation time from employees, which has been done in the past. Councilman Chuck Mosley proposed, and the council approved, a policy that would allow employees to request no more than two weeks vacation time to be sold back to the city, but only if the mayor deems that there are sufficient city finances to cover the request. Employees who want more than two weeks sold back would have to have council approval.

In other business, the council:

• Tabled action on hiring a part-time building inspector, while a council committee re-works the guidelines for the position

• Approved repairs to a police car, in the amount of $450

• Agreed to pay for City Clerk Demetra Mixon to attend a training session with the Alabama Association of Municipal Clerks

• Voted to allow Ragland to purchase a new push-type lawn mower for use around City Hall, the library and community center.
