Gardendale police commended for work in Greer shooting

GARDENDALE — Seven Gardendale Police Department members have been given commendations for their work in the Greer shooting incident on Jan. 10.

Among those honored is Lt. Marty Brown, who was given the Police Star Medal for his working in subduing the Rev. Dr. Terry Greer, who police believe shot and killed his wife at the Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church parsonage.

Brown led the forced entry into the parsonage and then struggled with Greer, who tried to take Brown’s pistol away, according to the commendation accompanying the medal.

Brown provided medical aid to Greer, who had stabbed himself in the chest with a knife. Brown continued to restrain Greer while paramedics treated Greer for the wound.

“Lieutenant Brown’s initiative in leading other officer’s into the residence to locate the victim and suspect demonstrated a high level of leadership and courage. His rapid subduing of the suspect prevented further injury to the suspect and potential harm to others,” the commendation stated.

Brown was presented with the medal by Chief Mike Walker as part of Thursday’s ribbon-cutting and open house for the new Public Safety Center, which is the police department’s new home.

In addition to Brown’s medal, six others received letters of commendation for their work in the incident. Lt. Bryan Lynch, Sgt. Scott Banks, Cpl. Brian Odom, Det. Brian Baker, Det. Chris Clark, Officer Mike Roberts and Officer Kellie Spencer were recognized by Walker during the ceremony.

Greer remains hospitalized at UAB, recuperating from stab wounds and pneumonia. When he is released, he will be held without bond on charges of murder and attempted murder. The latter charge is for the shooting of his teenage daughter, who police say eventually wrestled the gun away from her father and fled the scene. She was treated and released from UAB Hospital.
