Gardendale council proposes comprehensive rewrite of zoning ordinances

GARDENDALE — The Gardendale City Council has put the wheels in motion for the first comprehensive rewrite of city zoning ordinances in at least a couple of decades.

In fact, it’s been so long that Mayor Othell Phillips and Councilman Alvin Currington — who represents the council on the Planning and Zoning Board — couldn’t even remember the last rewrite.

A synopsis of the 207-page proposal was given its first reading in the council’s regular session Monday night. The proposed rewrite covers many things, including business and structure types that didn’t even exist in the last rewrite, removal of redundancies and obsolete language, and a new map that covers changes in zoning areas — and for that matter, the city as a whole.

The proposed ordinance will be available for public inspection in several locations, including City Hall, the Gardendale Martha Moore Library, and online at the city’s website. It will also be published in The North Jefferson News in its entirety, as required by state law.

The council set a public hearing on the proposal for March 4, to be held before the regular council session.

In other business, the council:

• Appointed Bobby Lott as municipal judge and Kenneth Gomany as assistant municipal judge, replacing Don Colee;

• Promoted Jason Murrell to the rank of lieutenant in the Gardendale Fire Department, replacing the retired Richard Smith;

• Also appointed Murrell to a position on the Parks and Recreation Board, replacing Kenny Vaughn, for a term ending Jan. 1, 2017;

• Reappointed Dr. Bill Allen to the parks board through Jan. 1, 2017, and Maureen Guffin to the board through Jan. 1, 2015;

• Declared surplus a mobile home used by the police department, located below the Clemons Soccer Complex, and donated it to Cornerstone Ranch to be used as a second bunkhouse;

• Declared surplus a Coachman travel trailer, also used by the police, and donated it to the city of Brookside;

• Presented a proclamation to the owners of Wilson’s Florist, in honor of 50 years in business in Gardendale;

• Presented the first of a series of donations to public schools in Gardendale with a check for $2,700 ($135 per classroom) to Laura Ware, principal at Snow Rogers Elementary.
