A church just west of Fultondale can thank its neighbors for keeping a burglar at bay.
Late Thursday night, a man was attempting to break into New Hope Ministries on Shady Grove Road, near its intersection with Walker Chapel Road. Neighbors heard the noise, went to investigate and caught the man trying to pry open a back door.
One of the neighbors held the man at gunpoint until Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies could arrive and arrest the suspect.
Upon arrival, deputies found damage to an outbuilding and to a window that the perpetrator tried to open, Chief Deputy Randy Christian said.
Jesse Dixon, 23, of Center Point is lodged in the county jail in lieu of $12,500 bond, after being charged with third-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools.
