NORTH JEFFERSON —
The city of Fultondale has increased its fleet by more than 30 vehicles in less than six months, and has not paid a dime for any of them.
The vehicles are military surplus items and include seven humvees, seven tractors, seven diesel generator sets, a forklift, front end loader, trailers and even a street sweeper and bucket truck.
The value of the vehicles exceeds $1.3 million. Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery said crews will use the bucket truck to change light bulbs at the ball park and for other jobs.
“Getting this equipment from the military will come in handy,” he said.
Lowery said the vehicles will be spread out among city departments.
“This equipment can be shared with other cities,” he added. “You’ll be seeing some of it in neighborhoods soon, doing some work.”
One of the humvees is being painted and striped in the Fultondale Police vehicle scheme.
“It will be a real showpiece,” Lowery said.
The city obtained the vehicles from as far as Texas and Wisconsin.
He said the city is required to keep the surplus vehicles for two years and then can sell them if it wishes.
