Black Creek Arts Festival set for Saturday

The second annual Black Creek Arts Festival is making a return to Fultondale as part of Fultondale Arts Council’s effort to promote art to locals of north Jefferson.

As its name implies, the upcoming festival will have an art gallery to go along with live music and activities for children. The gallery will feature artwork by more than 30 local and out-of-state artists.

Notable artists include Maurice Cook and Jim Weaver, who are both folk artists, and Teresa Wamble, who is known for artistic gourds.

Children will be able to take part in art activities and classes. Some of the artists whose work is featured in the gallery will be guiding the classes.

“It’s just helping them understand what art is and having an appreciation of art,” said Kara Kennedy, volunteer chair for the Fultondale Arts Council.

Live music will be performed by Wildwood Ruminators, The Gypsy Begonias and Abbey Parks. A new concession stand will provide food and soft drinks for sale.

All of the artwork featured in the gallery can be purchased. Five percent of proceeds from artwork will go to art educational programs provided by the Fultondale Arts Council.

Kennedy hopes the crowd will overtake last year’s total of over 200 people.

Two noted artists of the north Jefferson area are Linda Holt and Carolyn Wass. They are in the Fultondale Arts Council and are helping to coordinate the Black Arts Festival.

Black Creek Arts Festival will take place at Black Creek Park in Fultondale on June 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For directions and a schedule, visit www.fultondaleartscouncil.org and click Black Creek Arts.
