Updated: Warrior man arrested after crime spree

A Warrior man is under arrest after a crime spree Wednesday that saw him threaten to burn down his house with his wife inside, followed by a carjacking and an attempted break-in at an occupied school near Remlap.

Carlton Bruce Murray, 41, was apprehended by Blount County Sheriff's deputies after he attempted a carjacking near Southeastern School. He then tried to break into the school while classes were in session. When that failed, Murray ran into the nearby woods, where he was caught.

Before he reached Blount County, Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian said that Murray had poured gasoline throughout his house in the 1700 block of Sweetwater Way, and had shoved his wife into a room. Christian added that Murray told his 8-year-old son that he was going to burn the house down with them inside. Murray's wife escaped with her mobile phone after Murray beat her. He then fled and went to Birmingham, where he stole a firearm from a co-worker and went to Remlap.

"I don't know what kind of sorry excuse of a man is capable of terrorizing an 8-year-old little boy and a woman like that, but I do believe there is a special place for them," Christian said.

Murray is held in the Blount County Jail in Oneonta without bond. He is charged with first degree robbery, second degree burglary, third degree receiving stolen property, terroristic threatening, resisting arrest and carrying a prohibited firearm on school grounds.

Jefferson County plans to charge him with attempted arson, first degree robbery and first degree domestic violence.

Updated at 1:00 p.m. to add Blount County charges, and at 2:00 p.m. to add Christian's comments.
