NJN/am for Thursday, April 10

It's Thursday, and it looks nice...

Weather: Now that's better. Sunny skies and warmer temperatures are in store today, with highs in the middle 70s and lows in the lower 50s. Pretty much the same forecast is in place for Friday and Saturday.

Stabbing rampage. A high school sophomore wielded knives as he moved through his school near Pittsburgh, Pa. on Wednesday, stabbing or slashing 22 people before he was stopped by an assistant principal. Police say that Alex Hribal, 16, went through Franklin Regional High School in the town of Murrysville, stabbing victims in the arms and torso. Some victims remain in critical condition, according to The Associated Press. Hribal is being charged as an adult.

Sports: Big-game Thursday. It's do-or-die time for Pinson Valley's baseball team, as they must sweep Moody in a doubleheader this evening at their home field to qualify for the Class 5A playoffs. That predicament came after the Blue Devils beat the Indians 5-2 on Tuesday. A win for the Tribe in the first game would tie Moody with a 3-3 area record, and the second game would serve as the tiebreaker. In softball, Mortimer Jordan will host top-ranked Curry in an important Area 12 game beginning at 5 p.m. The Blue Devils just moved up to the fourth spot in the ASWA Class 5A rankings issued late Wednesday night, but that still leaves them as the third-best team in the area behind Curry and No. 2 Hayden. On the baseball side of the new rankings, Jordan dropped out after being ranked eighth last week; they're now in the “also nominated” category beside Pinson Valley.
