NJN/am for Wednesday, April 17

Hello, Wednesday…

Weather: Beauty, eh? We will have a summer-like day, which means there may be a few pop-up showers here and there, but otherwise sunny with a high in the middle 80s. Lows tonight will dip to the middle 60s. That line of severe weather that we’ve been watching will likely arrive Friday morning — more on that tomorrow.

Finding a terrorist. Investigators continue to pore over the scene of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing, trying to find bits and pieces that will tell them about the nature of the explosives, and possibly who put them there. Already they’ve found what is left of a pressure cooker that apparently contained ball bearings, nails and other shrapnel, as well as the remains of nylon bags that held the bombs. Police and the FBI have asked anyone who has any video or photos of the site before or after to submit them, even if it doesn’t appear to have a direct bearing on the bombing.

Safe and sound. Shawn Collier Hazelrig of Hayden started Monday’s Boston Marathon for two reasons:  to celebrate her 40th birthday and to raise money for a form of cancer that afflicts her mother-in-law. But her run was cut short by the bombing, which happened when Hazelrig was at about the 20-mile mark, roughly six miles away. By the time she reached her cheering section at mile 25, she found out what happened, and later found that she would not reach the finish. Read her account of Monday’s events in today’s print edition of The North Jefferson News.

Legendary gospel singer passes. George Beverly Shea, the longtime bass soloist for the Billy Graham evangelistic crusades, died Tuesday after a brief illness in Asheville, N.C. He was 104. Shea joined the Graham association in 1947, but was already a popular singer by that time. He stayed with the crusades until Graham’s health ended public appearances a few years ago, ending a six-decade tenure.
