Weather: A much-needed light rain is expected to continue today, along with a break from the heat. The predicted high is 84.
Traffic: Weather permitting beginning at 10 p.m. today, the Alabama Department of Transportation will perform geotechnical investigations on I-59, northbound and southbound, in Birmingham. The lane closures will be as follows:
• I-59 northbound outside (right) lane between the I-59/I-65 Route Interchange (Exit 124) and the 31st Street Interchange (Exit 126-B);
• I-59 southbound outside (right) lane between the 31st Street Interchange (Exit 126-B) and the I-59/I-65 Route Interchange (Exit 124);
• -59 northbound inside (left) lane between the I-59/I-65 Route Interchange (Exit 124) and the 31st Street Interchange (Exit 126-B); and
• I-59 southbound inside (left) lane between the 31st Street Interchange (Exit 126-B) and the I-59/I-65 Route Interchange (Exit 124).
Locally: The Gardendale Area Rotary Club on Wednesday named Lewis McDonald as winner of the annual Martha Wilson/Rotarian of the Year award.
Penn State scandal: A 267-page report led by former FBI director Louis Freeh at Penn State concluded that legendary coach Joe Paterno, president Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz "failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade." Assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted recently of 45 criminal counts of sexually abusing several boys over more than a decade.
