CENTER POINT — A Center Point man has been arrested by Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies and charged with a string of break-ins that included burglaries and sexual assaults.
Ricky Daiqwane Burgin, 20, was arrested on 15 different counts, including sexual abuse, rape, first-degree sodomy, two counts of kidnapping, six counts of first-degree robbery and five counts of first-degree armed burglary.
Burgin was first captured on September 5, after Jefferson County Sheriff's investigators became convinced that a series of burglaries and sexual assaults from January to that date were tied to a single suspect. Deputies responded to a call from the 100 block of 24th Court North of a burglary in progress; they had already been in place in the area as part of an operation to capture the suspect.
According to Sgt. Jack Self, a victim called after her son spotted the suspect trying to get into their apartment by removing a screen. The suspect ran away, but deputies in the area finally caught him after a fight. Burgin was charged then with first-degree attempted burglary and attempting to elude.
When the Burgin's description matched with those from the earlier cases, investigators got a search warrant for his residence. There they found a gaming console linked back to one of the earliest victims, Self said.
Since Burgin's arrest, no similar crimes have occurred in the area, Self said, adding that additional charges may be forthcoming as investigators continue to check out other leads.
Burgin is held in the Jefferson County Jail on bond totaling $947,000.
