NJN/am for Thursday, August 30

Good Thursday morning to you…

Weather: Tropical Storm Isaac continues to plod its way through Louisiana, having reached Baton Rouge not long after midnight. The storm continues to drift to the north, and the eye won’t enter Arkansas until late tonight at the earliest. For our area, we’ll have scattered showers and thunderstorms with highs in the middle 80s and lows in the lower 70s. Expect more of the same on Friday, with temperatures inching up a bit.

Stripping copper while, uh, stripping. Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man and woman from Trafford for breaking into a vacant mobile home south of McCalla on South Shades Crest Road on Tuesday. Deputies responded to a call from a neighbor who saw a strange vehicle outside the trailer. They found a pickup truck with copper wire stripped from the home in the truck bed, and as they headed inside to find a perpetrator, out walked Klark Alan Gray, 33 — naked. He was arrested, along with Brandy Johnsey, 33, who was fully clothed. Both had outstanding warrants, to which were added charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal trespassing. The pair is lodged in the Shelby County Jail, and is suspected in a string of robberies in and near Hoover.

Ryan wows GOP faithful. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, formally accepted the Republican nomination for vice president at the party convention in Tampa on Wednesday. Presidential nominee Mitt Romney makes his acceptance speech tonight,

Sports: NFL sticks with replacement refs. The National Football League and its referees are still at loggerheads over labor negotiations, so the league has announced it will use replacement officials in the first week of the regular season, as it has done throughout the pre-season exhibition games. The replacement refs, who have met with criticism for blown calls, largely come from small-college ranks…. Baseball: The Braves lost to the Padres 8-2 on the last game of a 10-game road trip. They remain atop the National League wild card race, however.
