Fultondale hair stylist takes talent to NYC

FULTONDALE — Although supermodel Naomi Campbell is known for being a diva, Fultondale stylist Angela Kanaday said Gisele is the one who threw a hairbrush at her.

If you’ve never heard of those models, that’s probably normal; on the other hand Kanaday, who works at All American Curls in Fultondale, recently worked with the models for Vogue Magazine’s “Fashion’s Night Out” show, which kicked off Fashion Week in New York City and aired on CBS last month.

Kanaday also works for hair care product company Redken as a “Redken artist,” where she is sent to other places, often out-of-state, to teach other hair stylists her artistic methods. She was among 120 stylists chosen from 5,000 Redken employees to participate in Vogue’s show.

“Being a part of the backstage hair team allowed me to sharpen my hairstyling skills and find inspiration in runway hair trends,” said Kanaday. She and the rest of the stylists worked together to create seven hairstyles: “Fifties Flair, “Rocker Chic,” “Weekend Wrap-Up, “Pure of Heart,” “Tartan Twist,” “Go Global,” “Super Model” and “Jazz Age Cool.”

“I would love to move to New York someday,” she said. “It’d be hard to right now, though. My mom and I have created a home here, and it would be hard to leave that behind.” Kanaday’s mother works at All American Curls with her, and they have plans to expand the business.

One of the expansions involves another of Kanaday’s passions: Photography. The salon is planning to install a photography studio inside the building.

“Photographing hair can be challenging. Hair is very three-dimensional and pictures are very two-dimensional. You have to find ways to give them depth,” she said.

Kanaday has been interested in photography since high school, and she said it helps diversify her portfolio and strengthens her artistic process when styling hair. For instance, she says her photography helps her find color patterns in everyday objects and apply them to her hairstyling.
