North Jefferson News
— Wednesday, and we’re halfway there…
Weather: We’re on a roll. It’s a forecast that is little changed from the last two days — sunny and warm, with highs near 80 and nighttime lows in the middle 50s. More of the same for Thursday; isolated showers creep in on Friday afternoon.
GOP runoff needed for state house seat. A special election on Tuesday to fill the vacant Alabama House District 34 seat whittled six Republican candidates down to two, which will require a runoff on Dec. 11. The two remaining candidates are David Standridge of Hayden, the recently-retired Blount County probate judge and commission president, and businessman Chris Latta of Oneonta. Returns showed that Standridge got a bit over 33 percent of the vote, with Latta and former House member Jim Murphree nearly tied — Latta was runner-up by only 25 votes. The runoff winner will be unopposed in a general election. The district includes most of Blount County and a small portion of northern Jefferson County, including Warrior. The seat was vacated when Gov. Robert Bentley appointed Elwyn Thomas to head the Alabama Manufactured Housing Commission.
Local cases on Boy Scout list. Attorneys for plaintiffs in a longstanding Oregon lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America have released a so-called “perversion file,” which lists men who were banned from volunteering for Scouting duties because of improper relations with young boys — some prosecuted by law, others never acted on legally. The list includes details of more than 1,200 cases across the nation from 1965 to 1985, including one involving an assistant scoutmaster of a Pinson troop who resigned after allegations he sought relations with a boy he was taking to a youth wrestling tournament in Nebraska in 1984. An additional file showed thousands of other cases for which details were not released yet; one such case was listed in Gardendale in 1992.
Sports: The Fall Classic begins. It’s Game 1 of the 2012 World Series tonight in San Francisco, as the Giants take on the Detroit Tigers. Justin Verlander is the starting pitcher for the Tigers, while Barry Zito gets the call to the mound for the Giants. The game starts at 7 p.m. on Fox-6… Cross country: Center Point won the boys division of the 18th annual Jefferson County Schools Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Mortimer Jordan. The host team finished second, and Corner — which only had one boy and one girl running last year — placed third. On the girls’ side, Shades Valley/JeffCo International Baccalaureate was the winner.
