NJN/am for Monday, October 22

Yes, it’s Monday all over again…

Weather: Superb. It’s a very simple forecast — sunny and warm, with highs near 80 and nighttime lows near 50. Repeat until Friday, when a chance of scattered storms shows up.

Third and final battle. Tonight is the third and final debate between President Barack Obama and his election opponent, Gov. Mitt Romney. The debate takes place at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., and CBS News veteran Bob Schieffer will be the moderator. The topics this time will center on foreign policy, with the recent attack on a U.S. consulate in Libyan that killed the ambassador and three others sure to figure prominently. Polls leading up to the debate remain largely as they were after Romney’s victory on the first debate two weeks ago, with the Gallup organization showing him ahead by seven percentage points. Rasmussen shows Romney up by two points, but the Real Clear Politics average of major polls has Obama ahead by two tenths of a point, statistically a dead heat.

Nixon’s opponent passes. George McGovern, the South Dakota senator who was the Democratic nominee for the 1972 presidential election, passed away Sunday morning at a Sioux Falls hospice. He was 90 years old. McGovern, a staunch opponent of the Vietnam War, lost in a landslide to incumbent Richard Nixon, but will be remembered as the victim of the botched break-in at the Democratic National Committee offices at Washington’s Watergate Hotel — which gave the subsequent scandal its name, and led to Nixon’s resignation.

Sports: Time for Game 7. Ryan Vogelsong gave up four hits and one run, and pushed home the first of four Giants runs in the second inning when he hit into an error, as San Francisco forced a Game 7 in the National League Championship Series with a 6-1 win over the Cardinals. Matt Scutaro also hit a two-run double. The deciding game is at AT&T Park, starting at 7 p.m. on Fox-6… NFL: Matt Hasselback found Nate Washington in the back of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 1:03 left to play, as the Titans came back to beat Buffalo 35-34… College football: Alabama stands atop the BCS standings again this week, with Florida second and Kansas State moving up to third. Oregon is fourth and Notre Dame fifth.
