The line of severe thunderstorms that began in Mississippi is finally about to arrive in metro Birmingham, and the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning in advance of the storms.
The warning is in effect in Jefferson County until 10 p.m.
Expect gusty winds of as much as 60 m.p.h., plus near-constant lightning and heavy rain. Winds could be strong enough to take down trees and power lines, and low-lying areas may flood.
In addition, the severe thunderstorm watch issued earlier has been extended to the east, and no includes Blount County. A warning for the area is likely.
Avoid traveling or being outside during this storm. It should traverse the area within a 45-minute time span at the most.
