GARDENDALE — NOTE: This story has been updated here.

A crash between two vehicles on Mt. Olive Road sent one person to the hospital via Life Saver helicopter on Thursday afternoon.

An eyewitness told The North Jefferson News that the crash was between a motorcycle and a car. The eyewitness said the motorcycle driver ran into the car and went airborne, and described the scene as "horrific." A Gardendale Police spokesman confirmed that the male motorcycle driver was the only injury, and that Life Saver took him to UAB Hospital, but had no other details.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Mt. Olive Road, Mt. Olive Boulevard and Belcher Hill Road, just east of Interstate 65. Traffic coming eastbound off the exit ramp was blocked for some time.

The crash happened at about 4:30 p.m., in between the dismissal of Mortimer Jordan High School's graduation ceremonies at nearby Gardendale First Baptist Church and the start of Gardendale High's ceremony that evening.

The eyewitness confirmed that the victim was not a student at either school.

Updated at 9:05 p.m. to further describe the crash and to indicate the victim was not a student. More updates as details become available.
