Hello, rainy Wednesday...
Weather: The rain is coming – we promise. It's a little slower getting here than originally forecast, but showers will finally roll in around lunchtime, with high temperatures in the upper 70s and a 70 percent chance of rain, increasing to 90 percent tonight with a low in the middle 60s. Rain continues on Thursday, with perhaps some thunderstorms, and a high in the lower 70s.
Gardendale girl's story goes viral. We told you earlier about Molly Anne Dutton, who was named Auburn University's 100th Miss Homecoming over the weekend. But the story of how she almost never made it our of her biological mother's womb is now attracting nationwide attention, thanks in part to a story on TheBlaze.com, the site of conservative talk-show host Glenn Beck. We talked with Dutton Tuesday afternoon, near the end of a very busy day for her; that story is on the front page of today's print edition of The North Jefferson News, and will appear online later today.
The deadlock continues. Negotiations in Congress broke down last night, as the House GOP leadership scuttled plans to bring a bill to the floor that would increase the nation's borrowing limit and possibly end the partial government shutdown as well. Meanwhile both parties continue negotiations in the Senate. All of this comes as Fitch Ratings announced Tuesday that it was putting the nation's debt rating on negative watch, meaning that the agency could officially lower that rating as Standard and Poor's already did.
Sports: Movin' on up. The Fultondale Wildcats football team continues to work its way of the Alabama Sports Writers Association's ranking of top teams in Class 2A. Last night, the Cats inched up to the fifth spot, their highest of the season. Fultondale hosts Victory Christian of Pell City on Thursday night... Baseball: Mike Napoli's solo home run was the only run of the game, as Boston beat Detroit 1-0 in Tuesday's third game of the American League Championship Series. The Red Sox lead the series 2-1. Meanwhile in the National League, St. Louis is one win away from a trip to the World series, thanks to a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles in Game 4 of the NLCS. Matt Holliday and Shane Robinson went yard for the Cardinals, who lead the series 3-1... Soccer: A miracle comeback for the United States, as they scored two goals in stoppage time – including one Aron Johannsson on the last kick of the match – to knock off Panama 3-2 in a World Cup qualifying match. The Americans, who already had a spot locked up in the world's biggest sporting event next year, actually gave new life to arch-rival Mexico with the win.
