"Big Al" finds new friends at Miracle League opening night

GARDENDALE — The new season of the Gardendale Miracle League began Friday with a visit from a very special critter.

"Big Al," the official Alabama Crimson Tide mascot, made a special appearance at the league's opening-night ceremonies. The fuzzy red-clad elephant mingled with players and helpers, and sometimes joined in the game action — intentionally or not.

The Gardendale Miracle League is beginning its fifth season at Luman Harris Park. The league caters to those with special needs, allowing them to take part in sports that would normally be out of their reach. The local league is one of two in metro Birmingham.
