NJN/am for Thursday, April 4

Good Thursday morning to you…

Weather: Yuck. Rain is the order of the day, with light to moderate rain this morning and possible storms in the afternoon. Highs will be in the middle 50s. Rain continues through the night and tapers of Friday morning, with lows in the middle 40s and highs tomorrow in the middle 60s.

Chaplain scam. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says someone is posing as a chaplain for their office, saying he needs to borrow money for gas because he has forgotten his wallet while on his way to jail or the hospital. Chief Deputy Randy Christian says it’s a scam that several people have reported, and that anyone serving in that capacity for their office will be wearing proper identification. If you see this person trying to scam you or someone else, call the JCSO at 325-1450.

Snakebit ship. More trouble yesterday for the Carnival cruise ship Triumph, which broke down on a cruise several weeks ago and limped into port at Mobile. On Thursday, high winds forced the ship to break away from its moorings, setting it adrift in the Mobile River and eventually crashing into an Army Corps of Engineers boat in dock for repairs. Damage to both vessels was evident, but minor. The same winds blew an occupied guard shack near the Triumph’s dock into the water; one person inside was rescued, but another still has not been found.

Jay goes walking. The rumors about Jay Leno proved to be true — the host of “The Tonight Show” will leave next year and make way for Jimmy Fallon, who now hosts the show after Leno’s each night on NBC. Reports of the move started to surface a couple of weeks ago, prompting Leno to make fun of NBC executives on a nightly basis, and even resulting in a spoof music video by Leno and Fallon earlier this week. No word yet on who will replace Fallon in the 11:35 slot.
