Friday, bye-day…

Weekend highs will be in the middle to upper 60s with lows in the 50, with a 20 percent chance of rain Saturday, 50 percent Saturday night and 80 percent Sunday. The showers continue into Monday.

Staffer commits suicide at federal courthouse. The Hugo Black Justice Center in downtown Birmingham was sent into turmoil Thursday morning when a man identified as the director of building services shot himself to death. David Lee Williams, 50, walked into the office of the Clerk of Courts and pulled the trigger once. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have yet to explain how Williams got past building security with a handgun, except to say that employees have not always been subject to the same level of stringent screening as the general public.

Rice withdraws. United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice has asked President Obama to remove her from consideration as a replacement for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Rice has come under fire from the political right wing for comments she made on Sunday political TV shows about the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, blaming them on a little-seen anti-Islam YouTube video. In her letter to Obama, she cited the “very politicized” confirmation process for her decision. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is seen as a likely choice to replace Clinton, who has expressed a desire to leave the post.

Sports: Indians win. Marcus Merriweather scored 24 points, and John Marable added 13 points and nine rebounds as Pinson Valley defeated Shades Valley 63-45 Thursday night at Mike Dutton Gym. The Indians withstood a rally attempt by the Mounties in the second quarter, pulling away for the victory. They face Hewitt-Trussville on the road tonight. On the girls’ side, the Indians fell to the Mounties 75-43… NFL: Cincinnati forced five Philadelphia turnovers, on their way to a 34-13 win Thursday night. That sets up a crucial game for the Bengals against Pittsburgh next week, with the winner of that game clinching the last AFC wild-card playoff berth… College sports: The seven universities in the Big East Conference which do not have FBS football programs have voted to leave the conference. The schools, all Catholic-based, voted to bolt from a conference that has lost Louisville, Boston College, Syracuse and UConn.
