NJN/am for Wednesday, April 3

Wednesday, hump day, halfway through the work week…

Weather: Rainy day blues. A front entering the state today will bring rain over the next couple of days, starting around lunchtime today. Highs will struggle to hit 60, with lows tonight in the upper 40s and a 50 percent chance of rain, increasing to 80 percent tonight and Thursday. Highs will top out in the middle 50s tomorrow.

Rolling roadblocks return. If the rain doesn’t interfere, blasting work at the Corridor X construction zone on Interstate 65 will require police to execute rolling roadblocks at 1:30 this afternoon. The roadblocks will start at Fieldstown Road going southbound, and Daniel Payne Drive headed north. Parts of U.S. 31 south of Fultondale will also be affected.

Abortion clinic bill passes. As demonstrators on both sides hollered at each other outside the State Capitol, the Alabama House passed a bill requiring abortion clinics to have doctors with hospital admitting privileges present during abortion procedures. The bill, which passed 68-21, heads to Gov. Robert Bentley for his signature.

Sports: Big win for Blue Devils. Area 12 in Class 5A softball has three out of its four teams placed seventh or higher in the ASWA state rankings, so when two of those teams battle, it’s a big deal. On Tuesday, it took an extra inning before No. 7 Mortimer Jordan pulled out a 2-1 win at fourth-ranked Curry. Pitcher Bailey Murphy struck out nine, hit a solo home run, then reached base in the eighth inning on a throwing error that allow Shelby Maze to score the winning run from second base… Baseball: Pinson Valley, Gardendale and Jordan all picked up crucial area wins. The Indians shut out Springville 10-0 in six innings, the Rockets topped Hewitt-Trussville 7-2, and the Devils swept a doubleheader at Hayden… Girls soccer: Fultondale’s first-year team got its second win of the season, blanking ACA 3-0.
