NORTH JEFFERSON —
After months of controversy, Kimberly’s mayor has announced he will step down next month.
At the last Kimberly City Council Tuesday, the council passed a resolution requiring Mayor Craig Harris to prove his residence with a copy of an Alabama Power bill in his name along with a deed or rental agreement for a property within the city. If he did not, the resolution called for Harris’ resignation.
The council did not address the matter during Tuesday’s council meeting, but at the end of the meeting a member of the audience asked about the resolution.
“This body does not have the authority to qualify or disqualify one of its members,” Harris said. “The residence in question will no longer be in question July 15.”
He then announced that he would resign on July 15.
Harris and the Kimberly City Council have battled in recent months over Harris’ residence, his taking advances on his pay and on other matters.
Councilman Bob Ellerbrock, who is mayor pro tem, said the city council will appoint someone to fill the mayor’s spot. If that individual is a current council member, the council will also appoint someone to fill that seat.
Municipal elections are in August, and the newly-elected officers go into office on Nov. 3.
