Weather: Cold. Temperatures today will struggle to reach 40 degrees, with lows tonight in the middle 20s. There’s a slight chance of rain for Saturday with highs in the lower 50s and nighttime lows in the middle 30s. Skies will clear for Super Bowl Sunday, with temps staying in the lower 50s.
Hostage situation continues. The standoff in Midland City, Alabama goes into a third day, as accused hostage-taker Jimmy Lee Dykes remains holed up in an underground bunker alone with a 5-year-old boy named Ethan. Authorities continue to communicate with Dykes through a PVC pipe; they maintain that the boy is unharmed. Dykes is accused of shooting and killing a school bus driver on Tuesday and taking the boy hostage,
Two dead at embassy. What appears to be a suicide bombing at a U.S. embassy in Turkey has left two people dead. The blast killed the bomber and a guard at a security checkpoint. The embassy in Ankara was not damaged. Various terrorist groups are active in the area, but none has taken responsibility as of yet.
Former NYC mayor dead. Ed Koch, the irrepressible three-term mayor of New York City from 1977 to 1989, died early this morning from complications due to congestive heart failure. Koch was a conservative Democrat who won his second election with the nomination of both the Democrat and Republican parties. Both combative and outgoing, Koch parlayed his political career into stints as a radio talk-show host, a frequent pundit on cable-news shows, and even a stint as the presiding judge on television’s “The People’s Court.” Koch was 88.
Sports: The Har-Bowl awaits. The pre-game media appearances are wrapping up, and it’s just about time for brothers Jim and John Harbaugh to face each other as opposing coaches in Super Bowl XLVII. The San Francisco 49ers remain a 3½-point favorite over the Baltimore Ravens. The game kicks off at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in New Orleans… Basketball: Dalton Hudson's 3-pointer with 18 seconds left turned out to be the game-winning shot, as Mortimer Jordan edged out Moody 58-56 on Thursday. Jordan’s girls won in a rout. Elsewhere, Gardendale’s boys and girls teams easily handled Tarrant, while Hayden’s girls won a close game over Good Hope, but the Wildcat boys lost. And in middle school action, Bragg’s eighth-grade boys will face off against Bottenfield tonight in the Jefferson County Tournament at Erwin. The Rockets polished off rival North Jefferson 61-51 in Thursday’s semifinal.
