Weather: Maybe icy, but probably not. It’s a close call as to where the line between freezing rain and just plain rain, but there’s a chance that north Jefferson County could see spotty freezing rain accumulating on roads and other exposed surface Friday morning. The chances are better in Blount County, with the projected freezing line somewhere between Hayden and Oneonta. Rain will taper off through the afternoon with highs in the middle 50s. Through the weekend we’ll have clear skies with highs in the lower 50s and lows in the middle 30s. A warm-up starts the work week.
School delays: Because of the possibility of icy roads, Blount County schools will delay opening three hours today. Jefferson County and Tabernacle Christian schools will delay by one hour.
“I can’t say a word.” An unusual response for someone who talks for a living, but sports-talk start Paul Finebaum couldn’t talk about his current situation with his syndicated show, which was cancelled Monday after his current contract with WJOX expired. Finebaum was the featured speaker at the Greater Gardendale Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, but couldn’t give any details about his next move, because of legal ramifications.
Sports: Buzzer-beater — again. It’s getting to be a habit for Gardendale’s boys basketball team, as they won a game on a shot at the horn for the second time this year. It was Allen Williams who pulled it off this time, as his shot beat McAdory 65-63 in the Jefferson County Large Schools Tournament at Hueytown. The Rockets move on to the consolation bracket finals. In the winner’s bracket, Center Point edged Pinson Valley in the semifinals, and will face Clay-Chalkville in the championship game. In the girls tournament at Shades Valley, Gardendale routed Hueytown and will move on to the consolation finals tonight. And at the Blount County Tournament at Cleveland, Hayden stayed even with top seed Locust Fork — but just for one period, and then the Hornets shut out the Wildcats for the rest of the half on their way to a 57-34 victory. The Hornets advance to Saturday’s championship.
