Gardendale council to take school board applications soon

GARDENDALE — Following last week’s referendum in which voters approved an additional 5-mill property tax hike in order to help fund a city school system, the Gardendale City Council is now preparing to take applications for school board members.

On Monday, the council announced that applications should be ready in two weeks.

The content of the applications is not yet known, but Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips said some basic requirements will be no felony convictions and the applicant must live in Gardendale.

City attorney Ken Thompson said there is no legal process for handling the applications. The only legal process is the actual appointment of board members.

After the application deadline, which has not been announced, the city council conduct interviews and narrow the field to 10 applicants. All 10 will receive training, and then five of the individuals will be appointed to the board and five will be selected as an advisory board.
