NJN/am for Wednesday, September 4

Wednesday again, and here comes that annoying camel…

Weather: Not as muggy. A cold front that came through the area has brought drier air, so while it will still be warm, it will not be as humid and nights will be cooler. Today will be sunny and warm with a high around 90, and a nighttime low in the middle 60s. The forecast stays the same for the next couple of days.

The first step. Gardendale’s city council has made it official — they intend to break away from the Jefferson County Schools and form their own local system. In preparation, the council had first reading of an ordinance to enact a 5-mill property tax to fund the new system, the maximum the law allows a council to approve on its own; it also set a date for a referendum whereby voters could approve an additional 5-mill tax. The council wanted voters to approve the entire 10 mills, but state law forces the two step process. The first 5 mills would take effect in October 2014, and the other in 2015. The council will vote on the tax and the referendum at their next meeting on Sept. 16; if approved, the vote will be held on Nov. 12.

Busy holiday weekend for the law. Gardendale Police arrested three people from Georgia who are charged with forgery and trafficking in stolen identities, and in another case arrested two people from New Orleans, one of whom distracted a shopper in a grocery while the other is charged with taking a wallet from the victim’s purse in a shopping cart. Meanwhile, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Mt. Olive man for growing marijuana in his house, which also contained an inactive meth lab.

Cleveland kidnapper dead. Ariel Castro, the man convicted of holding three women hostage for more than a decade, was found dead in an Ohio prison cell. Castro, who was facing a life sentence, apparently hanged himself.
