Julie Hannah cut from field for Jefferson County superintendent search

BIRMINGHAM —

The Jefferson County Board of Education has narrowed its choices for the system’s next superintendent down to three, but Gardendale resident Dr. Julie Hannah is not among them.

The board voted unanimously to narrow the field from five to three: Karyle Green, superintendent of the East Allen County system near Fort Wayne, Ind.; Dale Robbins, the retired associate superintendent of the Gwinett County system in suburban Atlanta; and Stephen Nowlin, superintendent of Lee County schools in Opelika.

Hannah was the only one of the candidates with ties to the area and the system. She was interim deputy superintendent through March of this year, when she left to take the job of director of student learning for the state Department of Education.

Before moving to the systems central office, Hannah was the principal of Gardendale Elementary. She grew up in Gardendale, and resides there with her husband, Dale. She has commuted daily to her job in Montgomery.

The board tentatively set to next meet on Thursday, October 11.
