GARDENDALE —
A Mt. Olive man is being sought by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly assuming the identity of a man incarcerated in a criminal mental facility in Mississippi, according to Chief Deputy Randy Christian. Steven Harrison Coleman is wanted by the Sheriff’s Office Identity Theft Unit on charges of criminal possession of a forged instrument and for taking and using the identity of a former family member.
“Coleman began using the victim’s identity in 2003,” said Christian. “Authorities believe that he stared using the victim’s information to avoid questioning on traffic stops by law enforcement because Coleman is a registered felon.”
Christian said Coleman has two vehicles registered in the victim’s name. He also obtained an Alabama driver license and an Alabama state identification card by pretending to be the victim.
Coleman is described by the sheriff’s office as a white male, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds. There is a $10,000 bond on him.
Christian said Jefferson County Officials are working the the Alabama State Troopers’ Fraud Unit on the case. Christian urges anyone with information on Coleman’s whereabouts to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 325-1450.
