NJN/am for Thursday, October 18

Hello Thursday, let’s dry out…

Weather: Back to nice. After the loud but otherwise harmless (at least for us) storms overnight, we’ll clear off and transition to sunny skies this afternoon with highs in the lower 70s. Lows tonight will be in the upper 40s. More of the same Friday.

Terrorist bombing thwarted. A man parked a van on the street outside the Federal Reserve Bank in Lower Manhattan, went to a hotel across from the World Trade Center site, activated a detonator connected to a cell phone — and nothing happened. That half-ton of stuff in the van that he thought was explosives wasn’t, thanks to an undercover FBI agent who was part of a sting operation. Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis was subsequently arrested and arraigned in federal court; he is being held without bond.

Left as a Democrat, returned as a Republican. Former Sixth District Congressman Artur Davis returned to his old stomping grounds, but for a fund-raiser for the party he used to oppose. The former Democrat, who ran and lost a primary race for governor, has since moved to Virginia and switched affiliation to the GOP. He spoke at a function for state Republicans at a downtown law firm.

Sports: Call in the reserves. Brought off the bench to replace the injured Carlos Beltran, rookie Matt Carpenter slammed a two-run homer to give St. Louis a 3-1 win over the Giants, taking a 2-1 lead in the National League Championship Series. The game was delayed nearly three and a half hour by rain. Over on the AL side in Detroit, Game 4 was rained out; the Yankees and Tigers will play today at 4:07 p.m…. College football: Honey Badger does care. Former LSU player Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu wants Sports Illustrated to leave him alone, and had his lawyers send cease-and-desist letters to SI writer Pete Thamel to that effect. Thamel and a colleague have tried to get Mathieu and family members to comment for the story they’ve been working on the past couple of weeks.
