NJN/am for Friday, January 10

Welcome to Friday, wet as it may be...

Weather: Damp. Scattered rain moves into the area today, with highs in the upper 50s and a 20 percent chance of rain. Showers become widespread tonight with some storms in the mix, and a low in the lower 50s. Showers gradually taper off during the day Saturday, with a high near 60 and a nighttime low in the upper 30s. Sunny skies are forecast for Sunday, with highs in the upper 50s and lows in the lower 40s. Rain returns on Monday.

And now, for the opposing viewpoint. Many of the same elected officials who faced a hostile crowd of opponents of Mt. Olive annexation on Tuesday will see much of the same again on Sunday afternoon, but this time from the opposite side of the issue. MO Matters, the group proposing that a large portion of Mt. Olive be annexed into Gardendale so that children there will continue to attend that city's schools once they break away from the Jefferson County Schools system, will hold a meeting on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Gardendale Civic Center. Organizers tell The North Jefferson News that State Sen. Scott Beason, State Rep. Allen Treadaway, Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips and several city council members will attend. Unlike Tuesday's meeting, the Sunday forum is open to all residents, including those opposed to annexation. And as with Tuesday's meeting, we'll have the most complete coverage of any news media here at

Fire scare at old Corner High. A fire broke out at the Corner School campus Thursday morning, forcing officials to move students across the street into the gymnasium complex until the fire could be put out. JefCoEd officials said the fire was confined to heating units in the old part of the school, which once was home to Corner High but now houses kindergarten through eighth grade classes. There were no injuries, and students returned to normal classes later in the day. The fire remains under investigation.
