BIRMINGHAM — The forecast of extremely frigid temperatures next week has prompted Jefferson County Schools to delay classes on Monday and Tuesday.
Students will begin classes two hours later than usual, and buses will also run two hours later. No breakfast will be served.
School staff and faculty, as well as Central Office personnel, will report to work at 9:30 a.m.
The announcement was made in advance of forecast lows temperatures dipping into the single digits on Monday and Tuesday nights. Several other school systems in north and central Alabama had already announced delays on Monday and Tuesday, with many also delaying openings on Wednesday.
There's no word yet on Blount County Schools plans. Tabernacle Christian School in Gardendale has no classes on Monday; it resumes classes for the new year on Tuesday.
We'll have further delay and closing announcements as they are made available.
