It’s Friday, and we’re headed into the first holiday of the summer…

Weather: Really nice. We will have mostly sunny skies throughout the Memorial Day long weekend. Highs today will top out in the upper 70s, increasing to the middle 80s by Monday Nighttime lows will be cool, in the upper 40s tonight and middle 50s later in the weekend. No rain in store for the next seven days.

“Horrific.” That’s how an eyewitness described to The North Jefferson News a wreck that happened near the intersection of Mt. Olive Road and Mt. Olive Boulevard near Interstate 65 on Thursday afternoon. A man riding a motorcycle went airborne went he ran into a car, whose occupants were not injured. A Life Saver helicopter transported him to UAB Hospital, which has not released his name or condition as of this morning. The wreck happened not long after the end of graduation ceremonies for Mortimer Jordan High School at nearby Gardendale First Baptist Church, and before ceremonies there for Gardendale High; the victim was not believed to be a part of either.

Congressman steps down. Jo Bonner, the Republican who represents Mobile and surrounding areas in the U.S. House of Representatives, announced he will resign later this year to take a vice chancellor’s job with the University of Alabama system. His older sister, Judy, is the president of the Tuscaloosa campus. A special election will be set by Gov. Robert Bentley to fill the vacancy, but the seat is expected to remain solidly Republican — the First District is almost as reliably conservative as the Sixth District here in Jefferson and Blount counties.

IRS exec put on leave. Lois Lerner, the director of tax-exempt organizations at the Internal Revenue Service, was placed on administrative leave yesterday after she famously invoked the Fifth Amendment in testimony to a Congressional committee on Wednesday. The move came after Republican lawmakers called for her to resign or be forced out by the Obama administration.
