NJN/am for Monday, February 10

HOOVER — It's Monday, and this may just be the best day of the week...

Weather: Now it gets ugly. There's another winter storm headed our way, and it could be even messier than the one a couple of weeks ago. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for most of north Alabama, including Jefferson and Blount Counties, beginning at 6 p.m. It will not be as bad as first though, with snow likely accumulating to just an inch at most. The bigger problem is sleet and freezing rain for metro Birmingham, which could leave a coating of up to a quarter inch of ice on bridges and roads overnight. Those problems could start around midnight. Before that happens, there's a 20 percent chance of light rain today with highs in the middle 40s. The wintry mix continues through about noon Tuesday before changing to rain in the afternoon, then back to a wintry mix that night with temps in the lower to middle 30s. There's a chance of additional snow and ice on Wednesday.

Beason is back. The Gardendale Republican isn't retiring after all – he's just setting his sights higher. After bowing out of a run for re-election to his state Senate seat, Beason filed Friday afternoon to run once again for the U.S. House seat held by retiring 10-term Rep. Spencer Bachus. He is one of seven candidates to run for the seat in the GOP primary, the winner of which will be unopposed in the general election as no Democrat is running. There are seven candidates running to replace Beason in the state Senate, including Gardendale attorney Jim Roberts, Pinson city council member Joe Cochran and Locust Fork attorney Brett King. In addition, Gardendale businessman J. Dean Taylor is unopposed for the Jefferson County Board of Education seat being vacated by Tommy Little, who is stepping down; Taylor was a finalist for appointment to the unexpired term of Corner's Ronald Rhodes last month.
