GARDENDALE — The city of Gardendale has agreed to pay health insurance hikes for employees.
Insurance costs will increase about $40 a month for family coverage due to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, according to Mayor Othell Phillips.
He said total insurance costs for city employees are about $1,200 a month for family coverage; employees pay about $500 a month with the city absorbing the remainder of the cost. He added that insurance coverage for an individual is about a third of that cost.
In other business, the council:
- heard the first reading of an ordinance to approve a planned unit development for Fieldstown Crossing, at the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Fieldstown Road. The council earlier this month annexed the property, at 4611 Shady Grove Road, with the condition that the developer will pay six years of fire dues to the Mt. Olive Fire District. The subdivision at the site is still under construction.
- updated the recently-passed zoning ordinance to repeal the verification letter fees and annual inspection fees for communication facilities
- declared a 0.3-acre site off of Moncrief Road as unneeded for municipal purposes, in order to swap it for another piece of land across the road
- amended a resolution authorizing an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation regarding road projects, by identifying the grant numbers and describing the phases
- voted to install two street lights on Flippo Parkway
- promoted Austin Brown to full-time laborer at the Gardendale Civic Center
- hired John Michael McKinney as a part-time laborer at the civic center
- promoted Donna Holcombe to administrative clerk in the inspections department
- announced the Jan. 6 council meeting will be held at the Gardendale High School auditorium at 11 a.m., with a public work session at 10:30 a.m.
