— It's Wednesday, and Christmas is a week away...

Weather: A little cooler. Sunny skies again today, but the highs will only reach the middle 50s. Lows tonight will dip to just above freezing. Thursday will be warmer with highs in the middle 60s. Looking ahead, were are seeing a chance of storms this weekend, and there is a possibility that some may be severe. We'll know more on Thursday.

A vacancy to fill. The Jefferson County Board of Education announced that 18 people have applied to fill the seat vacated by Corner's Ron Rhodes. Of those applicants, seven are from northern Jefferson County, including two from Fultondale. The board won't look at them until after the new year begins, thanks to an extension in the 30-day time limit granted by State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice.

Off-duty policeman injured. A Birmingham police officer was hurt when he was involved in a two-vehicle accident on Decatur Highway near the Gardendale-Fultondale border. Th officer, who was off duty, crashed his motorcycle into another vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening; his name was not released.

Sports: Hoops galore. Pinson Valley's boys basketball team won a key Area 11 victory over Springville on Tuesday night, while the Indians girls lost. Elsewhere, Hayden's girls whipped West Point, while the Wildcat boys lost to the Warriors, and Guntersville beat Locust Fork in girls action.
