Warrior
City receives federal grant for sidewalks
Warrior Mayor Rena Hudson announced Monday that the city received a Federal Transportation Enhancement grant of $206,356 to build sidewalks along U.S. Hwy. 31. The city must provide a 20-percent match of $51,589. Also at Monday’s council meeting, the city voted to enter into a $1,417 contract with the Board of Registrars for the upcoming municipal elections. The council also voted to write a letter to the Jefferson County Commission stating that non-sewer users should not have to pay on the sewer debt. Warrior residents all use septic tanks.
Gardendale
Mayor announces new car wash facility
Gardendale will soon be home to a state-of-the-art cars wash, to be located behind Shoney’s on Fieldstown Road. Mayor Kenny Clemons announced Monday at the Gardendale City Council meeting that Mr. B’s car wash is a $2 million project and could bring more outside traffic into the city to wash their car.
Councilman Billy Flippo also spoke out against Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Smoot, who has spoken in favor of an idea proposed by Jefferson County sewer bond insurers to levy a fee on county residents who use septic tanks, as opposed to sewer service. Flippo made the suggestion that the mayors of north Jefferson cities work with state legislators on the possibility of being de-annexed from the county and forming a new county.
In other business, the council:
• awarded a bid of $465,545 to Pro-Fire Equipment for a new fire engine. Chief Clint Doss said the engine would be delivered within 10 to 12 months.
• heard a resolution by councilman Wendell Phillips to oppose a proposal by Santek to accept outside garbage at the Mt. Olive landfill. However, the resolution failed because of a lack of a second motion from other council members. Earlier in the meeting, Flippo read a letter to council members from Santek which said the management company may have to accept outside garbage to remain profitable.
• presented a plaque of appreciation to city employee John Spitzer, who is retiring at the end of the month after 34 years of service
The council will meet again on May 19 at 6 p.m.
