Tabernacle Torches defeat Flint Hill

By Staff Reports

The North Jefferson News

The Tabernacle Torches traveled to Flint Hill Christian School in Bessemer Monday night to pick up their third win of the year.

The Torches were riding a two-game winning streak going into Monday’s game at Flint Hill Christian in McCalla, after losing the first two season games.

The Torches (3-3) squeezed by Flint Hill (4-2) by a score of 60-57.

Taber-nacle found much needed firepower in sophomore John White and seniors Landon Ingle, Jeremy Hol-combe and Wes Axt.

White would finish the night with a total of 31 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Ingle had seven assists.

“It was back and forth all night,” said Torches head coach David Corbett. “Landon went three for seven behind the arc and all three of those 3-pointers either tied the game or broke the tie.”

Corbett described this year’s team as a “good mix” of experience and younger players and he expects the team to come together as they seek back-to-back state championships.

“We had a pretty strong team last year and we were fortunate enough to win the state,” he said. “Guys we depended on quite a bit last year aren’t here this year.”

The Torches will next face Tuscaloosa Christian Academy on Dec. 2.

“They’re a good team and it’s going to be a tough game,” Corbett said. “They’re one of the top schools in the state.”

Northside Christian of Dothan will be the main team standing in the way of the Torches’ run for another trophy. Eastwood Christian out of Montgomery has improved, and should also contend for the title. Tabernacle will not face those teams until they reach the late playoff stages.
