Person You Should Know — Vicki Dill

GARDENDALE — Vicki Dill has worked at the Gardendale Police Department for 33 years, and is retiring in August from her job as an administrative assistant.

What was your job, in a nutshell?

I did whatever the detectives or sergeants or chief needed: I entered reports, tickets and citations... whatever needed to be done that day. I started as a clerk and worked my way up. I’ve enjoyed the work, I really have. And I’ve enjoyed working with the majority of the people that came through here.

What’s it been like working at a police

station?

It’s been interesting. It hasn’t been a real demanding job, but the variety of different things that come through here has been interesting. The biggest challenge has been the changes; I’ve seen three chiefs come and go. It’s sort of like an adventure; I’d come into work every day and wonder what I’d see.

What are you going to do when you retire?

Hmm... I don’t know. I’m a homebody. I’m on chemotherapy for cancer, and I have two more treatments. When I get done with those and I have my strength back, I’ll see what I can do. I love spending time with my grandchildren, and I’m looking forward to spending even more time when I’m retired. I have one son, and he’s blessed me with four grandchildren: Vedder (named after Eddie Vedder from the band Pearl Jam), Kylie, Jaybo and Anna. I play with dolls with one of my granddaughters, and Power Rangers with another.

  • Retreat brings out the fun in women

Everyone needs a little down time — a little time to get away from the regular routine and be free to be themselves in a different environment. This little break comes every year at this time in my life in the form of a women’s retreat with the ladies from my church, The Church Revived.
