GARDENDALE —
Leslie Gurganus, 40, lives in Mt. Olive near her parents Gary and Mary McAnally. She volunteers four to five days a week at the Gardendale Senior Center.
How long have you volunteered at the center?
Six years. I serve meals, wash dishes and help clean up. I’ve also just joined a weight loss and exercise group that just started at the center.
How did you get started volunteering?
My grandmother suggested that I call Peggy [Hoback Clark, the center director] so I would have something to do. I went to work the next day. I call Peggy my “boss.”
What do you enjoy about it?
It’s a way to serve the Lord. And I like to spend time with my friends. I especially enjoy my friends Linda Byrne and Linda Chapman as well as Peggy.
Do you have a church home?
I have been visiting at Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Gardendale. I asked the pastor last week if I could join. I will be moving my letter next week. I like the preaching there. And the people are really friendly and make me feel at home.
Besides volunteering, what else do you enjoy doing?
I like to write and I like going to dinner with my friend Patty.
What do you write?
I write in my journal. I put down what I did during the day, and prayers for myself and for other people.
Do you have any pets?
I have a cat named Precious. She is good company for me.
