FULTONDALE — Mack Martin owns and operates the Mack’s Speedy Dawgs hot dog stand outside of Lowe’s in Fultondale. He has been in business for almost seven years.
How did you get into the business?
I just have a few friends who do it, too, and I didn’t want to work for someone else.
What’s your best-selling item?
The $5 combo. I sell hot dogs and smoked sausage, and the hot dogs sell better. A lot of people say they’re the best they’ve ever had.
Do you have a secret sauce?
It’s the “Speedy Dawg Sauce.” I can’t tell you too much, but it’s barbecue-based and it’s kind of bold... I don’t know how to describe it. It’s got its own taste.
You’ve got a 100 health rating and a no-smoking sign. How do you do it?
You just have to keep up with everything, and do everything you’re supposed to so you can keep it clean. I’ve actually had a little problem with people walking up a smoking. Even without the new city smoking ordinance, Lowe’s has a no-smoking policy and the health department requires that I have the sign.
What do you do when you’re not at the hot dog stand?
I hunt and fish, and I like everything about it. I don’t think I like one better than the other; I like to do both, and I like to eat one as much as the other. I’m a landscaper by trade, too, and I do some of that. I’m never indoors.
Tell us about your family.
I have six brothers and sisters. We do Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fourth of July... every family get-together is a big deal.
