GARDENDALE —
North Jefferson Middle’s Family and Consumer Sciences classes and the F.C.C.L.A. service organization recently created over 100 care packages for children affected by the April 27 tornadoes.
Students created the bags to answer their essential question, “How Can You Make A Difference?” Each bag contained activity books, crayons, snacks, drinks, toys, stuffed animals and toiletry items.
Family and consumer sciences teacher Briana Morton was overwhelmed by each child’s dedication. “The generosity of the students and their parents brings tears to my eyes. Most of the students who created these packages don’t have much themselves, but they gave anyway because they wanted to make someone else happy. I love that kind of spirit,” she said.
Students delivered the bags to around 70 children at Fultondale Elementary. All of the recipients were currently displaced from their homes because of the tornado that tore through their city in April.
One child kept reading a note that was inside her special package: “I bet you are very brave. The storms were so scary and I’m glad that you are with us today. Please know you are in our prayers.”
The remaining bags were donated to the service organization “Alabama’s Lost Toys” and will be distributed to children in the Birmingham-metro area.
