Addictive reality show makes me feel like dancing
Commentary by Danielle Pelkey
The North Jefferson News
I’m addicted.
That’s right, I hate to admit it, but myself and other members of my family are addicted to a television show. It’s not all that popular, but it is enough to grab our attention and hold it for two hours at a time.
The show is “So You Think You Can Dance.” That’s right, a stupid reality-type voting show has captivated our attention and has refused to let us out of its grip.
These are usually interesting for the first few shows when they feature the people with no talent. It reminds me of the first few weeks of “American Idol,” when people still watch it and say, “Did you see that guy? I could do better than that.”
Well, that’s how they get you hooked. You watch the first few, just because there is nothing else on, and next thing you know, you have a favorite contestant and you’re addicted.
This particular show made us laugh because the contestants can dance in any style or genre they want to dance. You may see some ballroom dancing, buck dancing, two-step or street hip-hop. I really only intended on making fun of the bad dancers, but the good dancers were so great that I couldn’t take my eyes off of them.
Now on our free nights, we go home, turn on our DVR and proceed to stay awake too late trying to catch up on who is still on the show and who got voted off. If you watch this particular show, then you may care that my personal favorite is Joshua, but I don’t care enough to call in and vote.
I guess with the prices of everything going up so high, the free entertainment that comes from my television is enough to make a great date night for us. Actually, television isn’t free if you pay for satellite and DVR, but it is so worth it not to miss one minute of your favorite shows. Especially the ones that people get voted off of every week.
Although I know nothing about dancing, I do know what looks right and what is wrong.
I watch and say, “Oh, they were off on that one.”
Last night Todd actually said, “Did you see her miss that step?”
The funny thing is that we know nothing about dancing and steps, but we think we’re just as important as the judges when it comes to judging these dance competitions every week.
So, if you ever want to think that your opinion matters, just watch one of these shows and make your calls for your favorite contestants. It may show just how bored you are some nights, but who cares?
If you’re having fun and enjoying yourself then it is worth it.
