I have nothing going on and I wrote about it

Commentary by Danielle Pelkey

The North Jefferson News

Another weekend has come and gone and yet my creative juices have failed to flow.

You would think that with a three-day weekend like this past weekend, we would come back to work refreshed and ready to tackle the world. That does not seem to be the case around our office.

Some people took a vacation day on Monday. Others just came in looking like they were exhausted and ready to go back to bed. How funny that when we get the extra time, we spend it so actively that we need a vacation when we get back to work.

If your weekend was anything like mine, you were surrounded by food and family all day on Friday. It was such blessing to get to barbecue and lounge around with my extended family and not have to go to work the next day.

We decided to spend the night at my parents’ river house and leave on Saturday. When we got home, the chores of a regular Saturday were awaiting us, but who wanted to do chores? Not the Pelkeys! We decided instead to go out to eat at our favorite restaurant and come back home to a lazy night. It was like having a two-day holiday for us.

When Sunday morning rolled around, it was really tough to get out of the bed. We were so use to lounging that having to get up and get dressed for church seemed like a chore in itself. After getting to church, we got back in the groove. But after our Sunday afternoon naps, it was again a hassle to get awakened and ready for the evening service.

Once there, we were ready to give it all we had. We went to a friend’s house after church and didn’t get home until after 10 p.m. We felt well rested and decided to do a little reading before heading off to bed.

When Monday morning rolled around, it was the same old grind. Opening my eyes was like prying open two steel doors that were rusted together. I wasn’t really feeling the excitement of heading off to work until I got here.

Upon arrival I saw my friend and co-worker, Melanie. She is always a pick-me-up kind of person and once she asked me if something was wrong, I realized that the only thing wrong with me was a great three-day weekend.

So, here I sit, writing my column and being amazed at how quickly time flies on a Monday, if I’m actually sitting behind my desk and doing my work.
