Celebrate Arbor Day by planting a tree
WARRIOR, CORNER, HAYDEN — Garden tip: If you have not set out your trees, it is time to do so. Arbor Day is this month, so plant any tree. Remember to mix 2 tablespoons of corn syrup and a half-cup of apple juice with one gallon of water to dampen the roots as you plant. Water for seven days after planting.
• Happy birthday greetings to: Helen Harris, Richard Crane and Harold Dean Brockway on Feb. 8; Clara Dunn on Feb. 12; and Holly Blackmon today. I hope all of these have a great day and year.
• It’s census taking time. Paulette Campbell will be testing to hire census workers at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Feb. 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. You can come at one time, not both times. For information, call 307-5730 or go online at www.2010. censusjobs.gov.
• The Lions Club still has pecans on sale at R and R Drug Store, Superior Bank, Youngs Grocery in Trafford, Jones Cleaners, Ace Hardware and the Warrior Library. They are $15 for a bag of cracked pecans. Also, the Warrior history calendars can be purchased for $5 each at the same places the pecans are sold, plus McCurry Furniture store.

Use banana peels for plants
Garden Tip: When you boil eggs, keep the water that the eggs were boiled in along with the egg shells. You can pour the water and shells around tomato plants to keep down blossom-end rot.

A mixture to keep white flies away
Garden tip: White flies are on several plants at this writing. Mix one tablespoon of dish liquid with 1/4 cup of Listerine mouth wash with 1/4 cup of ammonia and one tablespoon of garlic powder. Over spray with this mixture in one gallon of warm water. Use the spray mixture while the water is still warm. You can use a quart sprayer or a gallon sprayer.

Mixture to use when transplanting shrubs
Garden tip: When you transplant a shrub or tree, mix in one gallon of warm water, 1/3 cup hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baby shampoo, 4 tablespoons of instant tea granules and 2 tablespoons of fish emulsion.

Great gardening tips for beets and cabbage
Garden tip: If you do not have a yard to plant, here are some vegetables and flowers that grow well in containers: beets; cabbage; cucumbers; lettuce; lima beans; onions; peppers; radishes; spinach; squash and tomatoes. You may try to grow tulips, grasses and any annual plant.

Center’s Valentine’s party a labor of love
Everything was perfect, except we didn’t have enough room for everybody. Our cars were lined up two and three deep. Those are just minor inconveniences, right?

Use fertilizer mixture, cola to ready garden
Garden tip: To ready your garden area for planting, use one gallon of fertilizer, one package of epsom salt, a box of Ironite with 1 to 5 pounds of sugar. Spread over the garden area, then overspray with one can of regular cola in a 20-gallon hose-end sprayer.
