VALDOSTA, Ga. — Three people were severely burned when a series of explosions set fire to a hazardous waste processing plant Thursday afternoon.

Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress said the three injured people were taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital.

Thick black smoke rising from the Perma-Fix facility, which processes waste including aerosol cans and ink paste, could be seen for several miles. The facility caught fire in a separate incident earlier this year.

The Gil Harbin Industrial Park, which housed the plant, was evacuated Thursday afternoon, and nearby roads were closed.

Firefighters from around the region responded to battle the blaze. Emergency personnel were attempting to shut off gas mains near the blast site.
